Salesian Sisters and the Spurs: A Joyful Connection
As Salesian Sisters of the United States Western Province, we share a special connection with the San Antonio Spurs that goes far beyond sports. Rooted in the spirituality of St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello, we are called to accompany young people, build authentic relationships, and witness to the joy of the Gospel in everyday life. Even following a basketball team becomes an opportunity for presence, connection, and evangelization.
For us, sports are more than entertainment; they are a bridge to young people. Through athletics, values like teamwork, perseverance, and respect come to life, reflecting the heart of Salesian education. By sharing in the interests of the young, we strive to live out Don Bosco’s conviction: “It is not enough to love the young; they must know that they are loved.”
This connection began more than 20 years ago with our Sisters in the retirement community, who faithfully followed the Spurs and enjoyed watching games together. One Sister even wrote to Coach Greg Popovich, who responded and later visited with his wife, forming a lasting and meaningful bond. In recent weeks, this story has gained national attention, as media outlets highlight our joyful presence, cheering, praying, and supporting the Spurs during their playoff run.
We have been touched by the many people who have responded to this simple witness of our life. As consecrated women religious, we seek to pray for and be present in the life of our city, reminding others that faith is alive both in the Church and in everyday moments. Our prayers are not about outcomes, but about entrusting all things to God.
In a culture often marked by division, the simple image of us cheering together has resonated with many; even fans from opposing teams have asked to take photos with us. By meeting people where they are, even courtside, we continue to witness to hope, peace, and joy rooted in Christ.
GOD BLESS & GO SPURS GO!!!
