Welcoming Pope Leo XIV

Welcoming Pope Leo XIV: A New Chapter for the Church

The Salesian Sisters of the West joyfully join the universal Church in welcoming our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. With gratitude and hope, we view this historic moment as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American and longtime missionary, steps into the role of shepherd for over a billion Catholics worldwide.

A Pope of Many Firsts

Pope Leo XIV carries a legacy of service, humility, and bridge-building. Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, he is the first American- and the first North American-pope, as well as the first from the Order of Saint Augustine. His ministry has spanned continents, most notably with two decades serving the people of Peru, where he worked closely with marginalized communities and helped foster unity and hope.

Before his election, Pope Leo XIV served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and was later appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. His deep commitment to the poor, migrants, and environmental stewardship reflects the priorities of his beloved predecessor, Pope Francis.

In his first words as pope, Leo XIV greeted the world with, “Peace be with all of you!” He expressed heartfelt appreciation for the cardinals who elected him, remembered his years in Peru, and honored the memory of Pope Francis before concluding with a prayer for the Church and the world.

Our Appreciation, Respect, and Prayers

As Salesian Sisters, we extend our deepest appreciation and support to Pope Leo XIV. We are inspired by his missionary heart and his dedication to serving young people, families, and those on the margins. We pledge our prayers for him as he begins this sacred ministry, asking the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen him.

May Mary Help of Christians, St. John Bosco, and St. Mary Mazzarello intercede for our new Holy Father. May his papacy be marked by wisdom, compassion, and the joy of the Gospel.

Viva il Papa! Long live Pope Leo XIV!
